They say it is better to have loved and lost
Than to have never loved at all
But I wonder if those who say that
Have ever had their heart broken.
Do they know the agony
Of lying awake at night
Wishing that special someone
Had not walked out of their life.
And then wondering if someone else
Lies beside him in their bed.
I wonder if they have experienced the heartache
From deep down inside
As memories of that loved ones touch
Bring tears to your eyes.
Do they know the agony of their heart
Being broken into a million pieces
Or perhaps the feeling it has been ripped out
As everything they built their life around
Comes crashing down.
Do they ever ask others
How do you go on living?
When everything that they were living for
Walked out the front door.
Or how about that favourite song
When it comes on the radio
Does it make them break down and cry
Knowing that it’s over?
Sometimes the knowledge of love is harder to bear
Than the ignorance of the bliss
That can be found there.
Before anyone tells you
That it is better to have lost in love
Than to have never loved at all
Perhaps they should experience heartbreak
And watch their loved one walk out the door
Maybe then they will realise
That the smugness of those words
Don’t comfort anyone on a lonely night
Or make anyone feel better deep down inside.
