Friday Fiver: The Writer's Life

1. What color ink pen do you like best?

I'm funny about pens. Firstly, I loathe Biro pens. I think they make my writing messier. OK, maybe they don't but I just don't like them. I have to write with ink pens. I prefer black but I'm also partial to red.

2. Do you prefer lined or unlined paper?

Lined paper. Hands down. I'm not really a doodler when it comes to paper. I use it to write. I may have the writing talent in my family but I don't have the drawing talents. That's my brother and sister hands down. Both are amazing artists, something I am proud of but I'm definitely the writer.

3. Which way do you prefer to read material: printed or on-screen?

I prefer printed but I can read onscreen and often do now. If I am editing my work though, it has to be print because it's so much easier to pick up mistakes reading it in hard copy than on screen.

4. Which would you rather get: email or snail mail?

I love getting emails but there is just something special about getting a handwritten letter. I've got to start writing snail mail again. I used to write to about 36 pen pals but then drifted away from it. It got expensive and I'd also sometimes forget to write to the person. I told an old pen pal Heather, I wanted to start writing to her again and plan on starting this week again. I'm just not sure it will be handwritten since I don't write much by hand anymore. I'm much happier typing and believe me, you would rather read a typed letter from me than to try to read my handwriting.

In some ways it saddens me I find it hard to write stories by hand now. Don't get me wrong, I scribble down ideas for my novel and ideas for new novels but writing it by hand is just too damn time consuming.

5. Is letter-writing a thing of the past?

I don't think so. I think letter writing is much more personal than emails. Yes, emails are quicker but there's something special about waiting a letter from someone and opening it.

As I said above, letter writing is something I want to get back into again.
